RAYTHEON BBN TECHNOLOGIES CORP.
This funding enables three
types of network infrastructure
to handle large-scale
experiments. One type uses
the OpenFlow
protocol developed by Stanford
University to allow deep
programming of
Ethernet switches. Another
type of GENI-enabled
infrastructure is the
Internet 2 backbone, which has
highly programmable Juniper
routers. The
third type of GENI-enabled
infrastructure is a WiMAX
network, developed
by Rutgers for testing and
experimenting mobile and
wireless services.
Once these GENI-enabled
infrastructures are up and
running, researchers
will be able to begin running
large-scale experiments of new
Internet
architectures, in parallel with, but separate from the daytoday
traffic running on today's
Internet.

The GENI control framework project objective is to fund the network science and engineering community to create a virtual laboratory, through a common API for exploring possible future internets at-scale. Dynamic and adaptive, GENI aims to open up new areas of research at the frontiers of network science and engineering, and increase the opportunity for significant socio-economic impact. The networking community's collaboration and 35 academic institutions and industry partners have been excellent.
Together we have delivered the following:
1. Meso-scale infrastructure that is instrument-able for researchers and experimenters.
2. End-to-end infrastructure that's programmable throughout the network. This allows innovations in network science, security, technologies, services and applications by the researchers and experimenters.
3. Provide collaborative and exploratory environments for academia, industry and the public, to catalyze groundbreaking discoveries and innovation.

| Description of Jobs Created |
GENI - the Global Environment for Network Innovations ?is a suite of research infra-structure rapidly taking shape in prototype form across the United States. GENI aims to transform experimental research in networking and distributed systems, as well as emerging research into very large socio-technical systems, by providing a suite of infrastructure for ?at scale? experiments in future internets.
This development and prototyping project involved 35 subcontractors consisting of collaborating sets of both academic and industrial teams to create and integrate prototypes such as security, tools, user interfaces, instrumentation and measurement. For the prime contractor, this project allows them to create a half time equivalent systems engineer. For the subs, the jobs created include a fraction of professors, researchers, research assistants, IT staff and administrative support personnel. For some institutions, their funds may also support a portion or full time graduate students and/or programmers.
The professors and researchers are the project PIs who have led their respective prototyping infrastructure development and integration projects. The research assistants, graduate students and programmers of each respective organization have been supporting the integration, operation, and running of the experiments. The IT staff has been supporting the campus connectivity, while the administrative personnel have been supporting the project on procurement, project tracking and reporting.
