UNIVERSITY CORPORATION FOR ADVANCED INTERNET DEVELOPMENT


Internet2, a non-profit organization, proposes the creation of the United States Unified Community Anchor Network. This national-scale network will construct the high speed internet access essential to connect all community anchor projects funded by Broadband Technology Opportunities Program with each other, and with more than 66,000 other anchors, to ensure a seamless national fabric of high-performance, open networks. Between Internet2 staff and contractors, the bulk of the work will occur in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Washington DC, Bloomington, Indiana and Broomfield, Colorado in addition to over 300 other sites where equipment will be installed across the lower 48 states.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description New sub-recipient Zayo Communications began the construction of the northern tier optical upgrade between Chicago and Seattle. It is expected to complete in Q4 of the third year of the project. The bulk of Internet2's national deployment has already completed. Internet2 continued final deployment of remaining cards and switches to support expected new 100G customers throughout its footprint. The project work is all expected to complete within the Q4 as planned.

Infrastructure Purpose and Rationale The United States Unified Community Anchor Network will make advanced Internet service available to community anchor institutions throughout the entire country. These community anchors will be reached through regional networks and extensions serving all 50 states. This project acquires more than 10,000 miles of newly lit fiber. At the outset, it will reach over 100,000 community anchor institutions, serving over 35,000,000 Americans (such as students, doctors, patients, library visitors, and public safety officers). The infrastructure will be capable of serving the remaining anchors nationwide. This project is expected to cost a total of $96,793,607, of which $62,540,162 (64.61%) is funded by federal dollars and $34,253,445 (35.39%) is cost matching. This project is expected to create or save 1,052 job years in advanced manufacturing and technical engineering.
