24M TECHNOLOGIES, INC.
SEMI-SOLID FLOW CELLS FOR AUTOMOTIVE AND GRID-LEVEL ENERGY STORAGE
24M Technologies will collaborate with MIT and Rutgers University to develop an innovative new electrical energy storage concept for transportation that combines the best attributes of rechargeable batteries and fuel cells. This technology incorporates high energy density rechargeable, renewable, and recyclable electrochemical fuel in systems that decouple power from stored energy. Early stage results and modeling show that this new power concept once fully developed could produce unforeseen increases in system-level energy-storage per weight and per volume, and at costs less than $100 kWh.
In addition, these systems could create plural consumer usage models including both household recharging and service-station refueling. These usage models can utilize much of the existing infrastructure. Moreover, these systems could extend the service life of vehicle power sources since system components could be serviceable and renewable, and the new fuels could have adaptable properties including grades of fuel with varying power, energy, and other attributes tuned for specific operating conditions and environments.
We believe that successful development of this technology will have transformational impact on the nation's energy security and on global climate change. By enabling the widespread adoption of battery electric vehicles, this technology would reduce consumption of fossil fuels and diversify the energy sources used for transportation, and increasing the utilization of renewable energy for consumer and industry.
24M will develop a prototype battery system that can be scaled to meet and exceed metrics ARPA-E's technical requirements for both transportation (BEEST: Batteries for Electrical Energy Storage in Transportation) and for grid storage applications (GRIDS: Grid-Scale Rampable Intermittent Dispatchable Storage). 24M will deliver a fully-integrated reduced scale model electrical storage system that demonstrates 1 kW peak power and storing 1 kWh of energy that scales to 200 Wh/kg, 300 Wh/L, 400 W/kg, 600 W/L, at full scale (50 kWh, 100 kW). The reduced scale prototype will be a template for scale up and commercialization.
