Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

PREMIUM POWER CORPORATION

The Goal of the project is to demonstrate competitively priced, multi-megawatt, long-duration advanced flow batteries for utility grid applications. The three-year project incorporates engineering of fleet controls, manufacturing and installation of five 500-kW/6 hour TransFlow 2000 energy storage systems in California and New York to lower peak energy demand, and reduce the cost of power interruptions. The TransFlow 2000 units will be placed into service on the power grids of the utilities National Grid and Sacramento Municipal Utility District. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Science Applications International Corporation, and Syracuse University will provide the data collection, analysis, reporting, and outreach aspects of this demonstration project. This Project proposes to achieve the following objectives: 1. Demonstrate competitively-priced, multi-megawatt, long-duration advanced batteries for utility grid applications 2. Improve load management, including peak shaving and time shifting from low - to high - value periods 3. Develop and verify creative control algorithms to manage storage systems used in micro-grid applications and fleet operations 4. Validate the economic benefits of stored energy into multiple Independent System Operator/Control Areas with distinct pricing 5. Share the lessons learned from these demonstrations with the wider community 6. Improve the acceptance of renewable energy systems by demonstrating approaches to battery integration to eliminate intermittency 7. Generate jobs in the states where materials and supporting systems are assembled These 5 flow batteries will demonstrate economic, reliability, and environmental benefits through 5 applications: electric energy time shifting, time-of-use energy cost management, demand charge management, electric service reliability, and renewable energy time shifting. The variety of the sites, applications, and host utilities will provide rich performance data, comparable across sites.

Project Activities Description Engineering
Quarterly Activities/Project Description Activities for the 1st quarter of 2013 include continued development of the new energy storage system architecture and implementation, planning efforts with the DOE for a restructured program and modified contract, and coordination of requirements and plans with National Grid. Improvements to the Premium Power energy storage system continue to evolve. Reliability testing is ongoing with several separate life cycle stands in use. Battery stack improvements continue to be investigated for potential incorporation into the present stack design. The battery storage module architecture continues to progress with an initial working prototype to be demonstrated in 2013. A planning and coordination meeting was held with National Grid executive management. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss project requirements for the proposed restructured DOE program. National Grid indicated their desire to develop both the Worcester and Everett Massachusetts sites as originally planned, placing 500kW at each site and providing fleet control aggregating to 1MW. This will require an adjustment to the contract modification request provided to DOE in December. Since the meeting, National Grid has drafted a letter of commitment to Premium Power for continued support to the proposed restructured program. The letter has been submitted to their executive management for review and approval. Once this letter is received from National Grid a revised contract modification request will be submitted to DOE.
