MISSOURI SYSTEM, UNIVERSITY OF
This proposal describes a request for $1.99M to support renovation of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system in the Graduate Center for Materials Research (MRC) at Missouri S&T. MRC's core mission is to foster research collaborations, and provide and maintain the sophisticated equipment needed for cutting-edge materials research. No significant changes have been made to the infrastructure of the MRC building since it was first occupied in the late 1960s, and as such it has degraded to the point of becoming a rate-limiting factor in productivity. In particular, erratic temperature and humidity control have adversely affected equipment operation and the working environment for faculty, staff and students. In March 2005 a detailed schematic design for renovating the HVAC system was completed; the estimated cost is $3.8M. Research laboratories occupy 72% of the 28,141 sq. ft. of net floor space; since the HVAC of the entire building has to be done at one time, Missouri S&T will commit $1.8M toward the project to cover the cost of the office and auxiliary support areas of the building. The drawings and design work only need to be reviewed and updated; we anticipate this 'shovel ready' project would begin within 3 months of receipt of funding.
