UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER OF SAN ANTONIO
This project entitled, "Equipment to Enhance Training for Health Professionals", will add equipment for expansion of the Advanced Education Program in General Dentistry (AEGD) Program. This residency program recruits and enrolls underrepresented minority and disadvantaged applicants in training sites in San Antonio and Laredo, TX and increases the ability of new dental graduates to provide primary care to patients with special needs. Program Expansion will allow the residency to increase its service and training in primary care to patients with special needs, those from vulnerable populations and the underserved. Program expansion will increase from 10 to 13 fulltime trainee positions. Currently served patient populations include medically compromised patients and high-risk populations including those with HIV/AIDS and head and neck cancers, medically underserved populations, mentally handicapped patients, patients with disabilities, indigent patients, geriatric patients, those who are substance abusers, victims of domestic violence and patients who are homeless. The program provides culturally competent care coordinated and integrated with health agencies, generalist and specialty dentists and residents, physicians and other care providers, including nurses, organ transplantation coordinators, private practitioners and residents in primary and specialty medical care. This coordination educates medical and other caregivers to the services dentists in advanced primary care can provide.
