Hiring New Faculty:
The project is now complete regarding hiring new faculty. Five new faculty members have been hired to date. Due to a one-year time lag in hiring the fifth new faculty member, a sixth existing faculty member is being funded by the grant for the last remaining academic year of the grant.
Strengthening the Curriculum:
The Master of Science in Renewable Energy Engineering program launched, with thirteen full-time admitted and two part-time non-admitted students taking graduate courses. Five of the admitted students were awarded graduate assistantships funded by the university.
Equipping New Labs:
Progress has been made developing all five of the new laboratories. The Power Systems Modeling and Analysis Lab (PSMA), Distributed Power Systems Testing & Analysis (DPST), Power Conditioning & Conversion (PCnC), Utility-Appropriate Energy Storage (U-AES) and Cross-Disciplinary Project Collaboration (C-DPC) labs are all in advanced planning and purchasing phases.
Extending Industry Engagement:
The Industry Outreach Coordinator has initiated both the consortium work and the internship program.
The consortium goal has been met through assembling a group of core industry advisory board (IAB) members to assist the Renewable Energy Engineering program in making decisions regarding its future direction. IAB members have provided many of the STEPS-funded student internships at their companies.
A process for facilitating the STEPS-funded student internships has been developed and many internships have been created. Students have been hired by several companies, and the last few searches are underway. (For more information, visit http://www.oit.edu/office-of-strategic-partnerships/internships). |
