PIEDMONT COMMUNITY ACTIONS INC
The Pathways to Early Learning Mentoring/Coaching Project is a professional development program designed to provide training and information to Head Start/ Early Head Start educators. This grant award will be used to increase professional development of 30 staff members through research and one-on-one collaboration among staff members. These trainings will help increase staff's knowledge of appropriate child care practices while building stronger, more supportive collegial bonds among staff.

Sixteen Teachers and Teacher Assistants completed required child development classes at the Spartanburg Community College. Mentors worked closely with an Early Childhood Specialist to provide Child Development Associate(CDA)classes, workshops and discussion forums for seventeen Early Head Start teachers and child care providers. The mentors provided professional development on the Second Step curriculum to all Early Head Start and Head Start staff. All teaching staff participated in several Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) workshops designed to help them become familiar with CLASS domains and dimensions so that they could increase their effectiveness of classroom interactions with children. Mentors used the scores from CLASS observations to provide professional development for teachers who needed support in improving their performance in one of CLASS domains. A comparison of pre and post test CLASS score was used to help determine the effectiveness of mentor interventions in raising CLASS domain scores. A broader view of the efectiveness of the mentor program and the Head Start intruction at large was accomplished by comparing Piedmont Community Action Head Start scores to national Head Start scores for each domain. Our goal was to meet or exceed the national average. Mentors attended parent meetings, encouraged parents to become more involved in the education of their children, and helped prepare learning calendars to be sent home for parents to use in working with their children. In addition, the mentors developed a summer resource guide for parents. This guide included free or low cost activities that parents could use to extend or continue learning activities with their children during the summer months. The Mentor Coach provided leadeship and guidance to Piedmont Community Actions Male Involvement Program and assisted with recruitment of dads and positive male role models. |
