Hawaii activities completed Jan-March 2013:
1) Hawaii's statewide school district and its teachers' union have reached a tentative agreement on a teacher contract that includes a new teacher-evaluation system and increases wages for the state's teachers based on effective performance. The four-year contract must be ratified by teachers; the vote is scheduled to take place April 17.
2) In March, HIDOE honored 32 schools for extraordinary achievements at the first annual Strive HI Awards ceremony. The awards, funded through RTTT and ranging from $12,500 to $100,000, recognize schools for significant academic progress for two consecutive years and represent a one-time grant to further improvement efforts.
3) 75 DOE schools have been selected to participate in the pilot of the Smarter Balanced assessment system, which will be launched statewide in SY 2014-15. The pilot is a national effort slated to involve more than one million students in grades 3-11 in Smarter Balanced member states through late May.
4) HIDOE is building support capacity by creating a cadre of in-state trainers certified by the New Teacher Center (NTC). Selection criteria and applications are finalized for the NTC’s Presenter’s Academy scheduled for April.
5) HIDOE and the Hawaii Governor’s Employee Association’s (HGEA) announced in January that implementation of the principal evaluation system would be expanded to all 254 public non-charter schools in Hawaii in the 2012-13 school year. This Comprehensive Evaluation System for School Administrators (CESSA) began being piloted in 81 schools in August 2012.
6) In January 2013, in partnership with INPEACE, Kamehameha Schools, Ma'o Organic Farms, and University of Hawaii West Oahu, HIDOE held a successful two-day conference, "Re-Imagining School & Community Partnerships Conference" to focus on current and future collaborative projects. Four complex areas were at the conference, including schools from both of our Zones for School Innovation (ZSI).
