UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO-MEDICAL SCIENCES CAMPUS
The purpose of this project is to provide state of the art equipment to train 160 Hispanic students and130 Hispanic faculty members at the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine (SDM). The specific objective of is to incorporate digital radiology technology to the curriculum for the training of Hispanic dental students and to improve the delivery of oral health services at the SDM?s clinics. This equipment will strengthen our program, enhance the performance of the Hispanic minority students at our institution, and improve the capacity of the School to train and retain Hispanic minority faculty. We propose to acquire nine (9) mobile radiology units and 2 Digital Panoramic/Cephalometric Radiology units to be used at the School?s Main Clinic. The purchasing process will begin in October 2010 and its implementation in the clinical curriculum will be achieved in August 2011.Our students will benefit directly by the purchase of this equipment as follows: 1. There will be an increase in activities that strengthen critical analytical and interpretative skills through the adoption of new technologies for the capture of images. 2. The learning environment will be enhanced with modern state of art facilities that incorporate the latest imaging technology in dentistry. This technology will also allow the SDM to offer the best service to our patients, the majority of which are underserved and aging. The purchase of digital radiology equipment is also a necessary step to be able to adopt the Electronic Health Record.

Two (2) ORTHOPHOS XG CEPH and two (2) PAN SENSORS, Machines have been installed and are working. At the same time three (3) periapical sensor modules and sensors, have been placed and are working, in our Radiology Clinic. There are 6 more sensor modules that will be installed soon.
The (9) Portable X-Ray Machines, will be placed to use in the same areas as the sensor modules as soon as the training for our faculty and students is complete. Training of Students and Faculty has been done partially. Students are already making partial use of the new technology.
We have already placed the equipments to work, trainings for faculty and students have continued, and students are already using the equipments as part of their daily training. We have experienced some malfunctions with our electronic capabilities, but are working on the acquisition of new servers for our School. This new system will be able to manage all the new equipment images adequately. At this time we have used all the money needed to acquire the equipments described in the proposal ($298,420.63). We originally thought that the costs of the equipment that we needed was going to be around $300,000.00 dollars, but it ended up being less than that. The remaining amount ($1,579.37) will not be used.
