| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
The objective of this project is to provide training and workforce development for the rural electric power industry and to stimulate renewable energy projects in the mid-Atlantic region.
Work is progressing well at the two local academic institutions. A no-cost contract extension was requested due administrative delays in executing contracts that occurred early in the program. DOE approved a one-year extension.
Worcester ?Wicomico (Wor-Wic) Community College is continuing two training courses that are underway during the spring semester. Student participation was strong and both classes were fully subscribed. University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is considering revisions to the two pilot courses, one on renewable energy business and a parallel course on renewable energy project finance. Discussions are underway to link economic aspects of renewable energy training with ongoing engineering curriculum. This could be of interest to more students and could increase enrollment.
Implementation of the wind measurement facility has stalled again. The commercial tower selected for this facility was inspected. The structural engineering firm hired for the inspection concluded that tower did not meet today?s codes and standards and consequently recommended against installing our instrumentation due to added weight. An alternative location for this field learning facility is being explored.
Program Manager participated in a wind energy educational symposium at University of Delaware to share training program results and exchange program ideas.
