| Infrastructure Purpose and Rationale |
The Institute of Neurobiology is an interdisciplinary research facility devoted to the study of the structure and function of the nervous system at all levels of organization from whole animal behavior to molecular biology. The Institute is entirely dedicated (100%) time and space, to research and research training activities. This project is specifically designed to implement improvements and renovations that will benefit the collective research objectives of all students and investigators affiliated with the Institute. It will also significantly enhance our ability to serve the broader Neurobiology community of Puerto Rico and from overseas. The project will address essential infrastructure needs of the Institute of Neurobiology, a free- standing research unit of the University of Puerto Rico. The proposed improvements will correct significant deficiencies including an antiquated air conditioning system, an obsolete network infrastructure and structural damages that makes parts of the Institute dangerous to occupy. A crucial component of the project will be the implementation of a vigorous maintenance protocol to avoid recurrence of the deteriorated condition. A major objective is to replace the air conditioning system (except for the animal holding area) with a central cooling plant with other systems, for the laboratories, that will provide humidity control, and building automatic controls system. Green design will include high efficiency chillers and equipments to mantain the units operation with energy reduction costs. The new project will increase the oportunities for research trainings and diversity in the scientific workforce.
