| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
To meet the overall recruitment goal of 3,250 senior participants, each CCN is expected to randomize 650 senior participants, with 350 of these funded by the Senior-ARRA expansion. Within this reporting period, the UAB CCN overall recruitment target was increased to 1,950 participants, with 100 additional participants added to the main UAB CCN contract.
Thus far, the UAB CCN has identified a total of 13 clinical sites in order to achieve the enhanced ARRA goals: Athens Internal Medicine; University of Tennessee Health Science Center; Saint Thomas Research Institute; Punzi Medical Center; Family Care Practice, Puerto Rico; Centro Cardiovascular De Caguas; Altamira Family Practice; University of Massachusetts Medical School; UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; University of Mississippi Medical Center; Columbia University; Medical University of South Carolina; and Great Lakes Medical Research.
Our ARRA Senior expansion budget contained the additional resources required to screen, randomize, and follow an elderly population larger than initially planned for who are expected to experience a high rate of study-related outcomes and non-study related disability. The UAB CCN has purchased all required equipment for each site, including the ECG machines and printers for study forms. Personnel from all sites have attended centralized training, or have been trained by CCN personnel. Among these sites funded primarily by ARRA, all have IRB approval and staff certified to perform ECG and SPRINT MIND interviews, and these sites have fully executed subcontracts. Screening and randomization for the study overall began in late 2010. To date, 21 of our clinical sites (13 selected ARRA clinical sites) have formally screened 2071 total potential participants, of whom 1438 were eligible, and randomized 1344 participants (277-Senior group). |
