REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO, THE
This project entails the development and demonstration of an innovative next generation
membrane technology for selective and energy efficient carbon dioxide separation from power
plant flue gas. We propose to develop gelled ionic liquid membranes and composite membranes
containing ionic liquids as well as complexing agents with CO2/N2 separation performance in
realistic process environments greater than any other membrane system with techno-economics
that exceed the current DOE/industry benchmarks. Specific project targets include achievement
of a membrane with a C02 permeance of 10,000 GPU and a C02/N2 selecitivity of at least 20.
Membrane performance will be transformationally improved through implementation of material
design strategies that enable greatly enhanced and selective C02 transport. The impact ofthese
enhancements will be further amplified through the development of commercially viable
selective layer fabrication techniques that enable controlled thin film selective layer deposition
on commercially attractive support platforms. The achievement of our objectives will result in a
non-incremental improvement in the combined economics and performance achievable and the
development and demonstration of a new separations tool that meets and exceeds, in stepwise
fashion, the ARP A-EIDOE-FE/ NETL techno-economic goals for this separation.

To efficiently separate carbon dioxide from power plant flue gas streams,we have proposed to develop thin-film gelled room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL)-based membranes with performance that will exceed industry benchmarks. To achieve this, and generate a commercially viable membrane separation technology, our team is developing both the RTIL materials and membrane fabrication techniques in collaboration with Los Alamos National Lab (LANL),the 3M Company, and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).Previously, a series of imidazolium-based RTIL polymers (poly(RTIL)s) were synthesized and sent to LANL. LANL has focused on spray-coating thin films of these poly(RTIL)s onto commercial substrates and testing the resulting membranes for CO2/N2 separation performance. The current industrial benchmark based on available commercial membranes is 100 GPUs (gas permeation units). With current configurations, our team was able to supersede this benchmark with a 100 nm active RTIL-based membrane layer performing at 600 GPUs.
In the last quarter (Q8),the 3M Company has been successfully coating our same poly(RTIL) materials on the order of 100nm active layers, using a conventional solution based coating process. These materials are currently being evaluated for their gas separation performance, the results of which are being used to optimize material compositions.
Our materials lab at CU has created a novel platform of poly(RTIL)s that has similar rheological properties to the poly(RTIL) solutions, but exhibits gas separation performance similar to previous gelled RTIL membranes. We are currently working actively with LANL to ensure that the bulk properties we observed at CU translate to a thin film configuration. We envision that this material will bring us closer to achieving the project goals. This Q8 work was performed by three postdoctoral researchers, one chemical engineering graduate student, one chemistry graduate student and five undergraduate students. |
