The objective of the Airborne Microwave Observatory of Subcanopy and Subsurface (AirMOSS) project is to significantly minimize the current uncertainty in net ecosystem carbon exchange (NEE) estimates over North America. Uncertaity in root-zone soil moisture (RZSM) is the primary factor that limits current NEE estimates. To achieve its goal, AirMOSS will adapt the Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) to operate in P-band (Ultra High frequency) to make direct measurements of RZSM and it's spatial heterogeneity over the major North American Biomes.
