YALE-NEW HAVEN HEALTH SERVICES CORPORATION
Grant Name: HRSA-10-259: ARRA Equipment to Enhance Training for Health Professionals, Post-Doc General, Pediatric and Public Health Dentistry
Grant Purpose: HRSA Funding was requested and was changed to provide the equipment for the 1 Long Wharf dental clinic in New Haven, CT, in order to facilitate the training of the pediatric dental residents who will be providing patient care.
Goals: 1. Purchase equipment for the operation of two dental operatories and two hygiene operatories, as well as a sterilization area and dental laboratory area at the clinic. 2. Use the equipment to train pediatric dental clinicians who can add to the dental workforce providing care to the underinsured and uninsured children of our nation.
Importance of Reaching the Goals: The overarching benefit of acquiring the dental equipment is to address health profession shortages by familiarizing and immersing the pediatric dental residents in providing services in medically underserved communities. In addition, general practice residents, hygiene students, dental assisting students and even medical residents will benefit by learning the importance of oral health in overall health. It has been estimated that nearly 500-1000 patient visits, mostly those of low socio-economic status or Medicaid recipients, will occur at the new clinic during the year that the equipment grant is funded, thus improving access to dental care in New Haven, CT.
