LEHIGH UNIVERSITY
This project is to install 750 high-speed gigabit network connections, including cabling, switches, and required backbone interconnections, to establish a high-speed network infrastructure in the Iacocca Hall C-Wing Research Facility of Lehigh University. The existing network is a legacy installation from the late 1980s. The typical connection currently is a 10-megabits per second switched connection running over Category 3 twisted pair. The target network for this facility is a 1-gigabit switched network, running
on 10-gigabit-capable, Category 6A, copper cable (ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10). Lehigh has already invested $90,000 in an engineering study for this project, with over 500 hours physically spent surveying the project site. In addition, Lehigh University has extensive experience in managing the installation of these types of networks and in providing continuing support for the over 1,700 active connections of this type already on our campus. Thus, this project will enable Lehigh researchers to take immediate advantage of these advanced networking resources and will continue to provide an upgrade path over the next decade. The project kickoff was held on September 2, 2010 and the project team has been meeting regularly since then.

| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
The Lehigh University C-Wing Network Upgrade project completed all
scheduled tasks by February 20, 2012 and expended all project funds
allocated to the sub-awardees. All segments of the new network are
operating according to specifications and design. All backup power
systems and cooling systems are operational. No network troubles have
been reported during this reporting period.
The construction project is complete, but the project period was extended for a year in order to report on the impact of the upgrade. The final report will contain information compiled from faculty who use the network, and will document the impact it has made on their research. |
