RESEARCH FOUNDATION OF STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK, THE
Seeks to build upon the successes of our current AAU grant (HRSA D54HP05462,
Andrea T. Manyon, PI) with the expansion of an existing Academic Administrative Unit,
specifically the Department of Family Medicine (DFM) at SUNY Upstate Medical University,
into a regional, interdisciplinary Center for Excellence in Primary Care (CEPC). In the process of
this expansion, we are proposing a collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics (DP) at
SUNY Upstate Medical University. While the expansion of the DFM into a center for excellence
will be an expansive and long-range endeavor with many facets, this request for funding is
focused upon two specific programs: the formal activation of a Practice-Based Research
Network, and the creation of a venture designed to match PhD candidates from social science,
health policy, and education schools and departments at neighboring Syracuse University with
DFM and DP research and educational enterprises. In the process, the establishment of the CEPC
that will improve the quality and academic rigor of primary care in Upstate New York as well as
the education of future physicians in that region, and will also create an infrastructure for the
conduct of translational research projects.
