UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS SYSTEM
EXPANDING COMMUNITY-LINKED INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT DISPARITIES RESEARCH Multiple factors have been identified as negatively affecting minority participation in research, including lack of trust, power differences, limited access to healthcare and research opportunities, participant burden, and lack of perceived relevance. This body of research also identifies a critical need for community engagement in efforts to increase minority participation in research. Community engagement is facilitated by intentional structural support such as community advisory boards, financial and other resources, involvement of minority researchers, community health workers, and community-based participatory approaches. This project seeks to establish a community-based research infrastructure that responds to these needs by adapting a successful model of community engagement?the Community Connector Program (CCP). This model is employed by the TriCounty Rural Health Network, a partner of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health. The proposed project will adapt this approach to encompass a broader vision/goal?establishing a community-linked infrastructure that will increase minority participation and community engagement in research and improve healthcare quality to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities. Once established, the infrastructure will be sustainable through the Community Engagement Key Function of the NIH-funded UAMS Center for Clinical and Translational Research, which brings together stakeholders in lay, health practice, and academic communities.

Toward building a community-linked research infrastructure (CLRI) to increase community engagement and minority participation in health disparities research, the following work has been done this quarter. The Research Team continues to focus on program implementation, monitoring and evaluation. The database subcommittee meets weekly to assure accuracy of the database design and participant entry. The database is fully operational and contacts, connections, and registry questionnaire entry is ongoing. The current number of participants is 2344. The evaluation subcommittee is evaluating the impact of the Research Collaborative by conducting key informant interviews and developing case study descriptions. The Research Collaborative met and discussed an emerging project between the Department of Corrections and healthcare providers to provide contraceptives to prisoners released from the women?s facility. The Health Literacy subgroup met and determined steps to apply for a Blue & You Foundation grant. The Community Advisory Board met and provided the Research Team feedback about data interpretation and recommended modifications to the health registry questionnaire. The Team submitted two abstracts for presentations to the American Public Health Association?s Annual Meeting to be held in November 2013. A data use agreement developed by UAMS and Tri County Rural Health Network Research Team members is being reviewed for approval. The team has made inroads on sustaining the CLRI through a partnership with the Translational Research Institute (TRI). Specifically, Tri County Rural Health Network has received TRI funding to use the infrastructure to increase research opportunities. The Research Team also decided to request a no cost extension which has been granted. There are currently four other grant projects collaborating with the CLRI to receive help with recruiting participants, using the electronic registry questionnaire, and developing new community partnerships. |
