| Infrastructure Purpose and Rationale |
The Basin 5 Sewer Rehabilitation Project will replace a portion of the City of Shelton’s deteriorated sewer collection system. The deteriorating system is causing excessive infiltration and inflow (I/I) into the City’s sewage collection system, the collection system becomes hydraulically overloaded when heavy rains occur. This has caused the Washington Department of Ecology to issue the City an Administrative Order. The Order requires the City to "fix" the I/I problem. Two of eight City Basins have been completed and it has been determined the rehabilitation work has significantly reduced I/I.
Basin 5, the third City Basin, Sewer Rehabilitation project will improve water quality by reducing the inflow/infiltration (I/I) and removing the surcharging of the sewer manholes on Olympic Highway South, 1st Street, and Mill Street. This project will replace 39,600 linear feet (LF) of mainline sewer plus appurtenances and side sewers, reducing the flow that enters the pipelines and causes manholes to surcharge. The construction methods proposed are traditional open trench (22,100 LF), trenchless cured-in-place pipe (15,900 LF), and trenchless pipe bursting (1,600 LF). The project will return current streets affected by construction to original state or better.
