CLEAN ENERGY SYSTEMS, INC.
The primary objective of this U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-funded project is to demonstrate an intermediate pressure oxy-fuel turbine (OFT) capable of turbine inlet temperatures of approximately 2000°F (1093°C). In order to accomplish this, Clean Energy Systems (CES) will work with Florida Turbine Technologies (FTT) to refine and finalize detailed design modifications to a commercial Siemens SGT-900 performed previously under Phase II of this project (pre-ARRA). This includes the development and experimental validation of a pilot-scale O-F reheat combustor to increase the temperature of 600°F (316°C) steam generated by a primary O-F combustor. In order to mitigate program costs, CES will work with Siemens Energy to procure a used SGT-900 that will be disassembled, inspected, refurbished and modified according to the design definitions created by FTT. All necessary new components and packaging will be manufactured and installed on the OFT by a Siemens-FTT team to take advantage of knowledge and expertise. The final assembled unit will then be shipped to the CES test-site for installation and demonstration. These activities represent the work outlined in Tasks 2.10, 2.11, 2.14 and 2.15 of the Statement of Project Objectives (SOPO).
In order to support the OFT testing, CES will upgrade its existing Kimberlina facility, reducing cost and time to demonstration. CES will work with experienced contractors to develop site layouts and balance of plant (BOP) equipment procurement plans. The test site upgrade will be coordinated by an on-site construction manager who will ensure the facility is ready to accept the fully modified Siemens turbine for off-grid, low-power testing. The industrial-scale OFT will be capable of producing nearly 150MWe, but initial testing will only run the turbine up to approximately 25MWe due to funding limitations. These activities represent Tasks 2.12, 2.13 and 2.16 of the SOPO.
Secondary program objectives address future commercialization of the intermediate pressure OFT. These include studies into turbine materials performance in the O-F environment, O-F combustion of alternatives fuels and the specification and potential development of BOP equipment and systems necessary for the implementation of industrial-scale oxy-fuel power facilities by 2015. These tasks are described in more detail under Tasks 2.09, 2.17 and 2.18 of the SOPO. Task 2.09 will test the existing SGT-900 materials, which have already proven sufficient for the proposed OFT test plan, for the purpose of identifying performance after long duration operation. Under Task 2.17, CES will conduct pilot-scale O-F combustion tests with syngases, liquid and/or emulsified solid fuels. Results from these Tasks will not affect the primary test plan but can affect future models of the OFT-900 for use in industrial applications.
