#1- PBG Structure Design & Optimization: Building on earlier success with experimental trial ET3509, Incom made two additional attempts to fabricate an equivalent PBG Structure based on 4-micron and 2-micron size capillary, having a single central defect. The first draw trial was not successful due to a manufacturing upset, but we had more favorable results from the second trial.
#2 - PGB Draw Process Optimization: During this time period, Incom Inc. took steps to industrialize some of the hardware essential for fabrication of PBG structures.
#3 - PBG Finishing & Cleaning: Novel CMP like finishing techniques were used for the first time to grind & polish PBG structures. These techniques appear to be helpful in being able to finish the fragile structures without damaging the thin walled structures.
#4 - PBG Evaluation: Significant effort was made at Incom to understand and optimize optical image analysis, dimensions of the PBG structure.
#5 - 3D simulations: Bob Noble from SLAC did CUDOS software modeling to determine the convergence of results from Task #8 and the measurements made under Task #4
# 6 - Evaluate Alternative Materials: Dr David Stowe built a high temperature test stand to evaluate our ability to draw fused silica at Incom. Characterization of the borosilicate glass currently used to produce PBG structures included having refractive index measurements made at 2.5 microns.
#7 - Coupling Structure & Laser Development: Two different initiatives were undertaken at Incom to develop PBG structures that also have 'coupling properties'.
#8 - Pre-Particle Beam Testing: SLAC utilized FTIR spectroscopy to map band gaps in the as built structures.
#9 - Particle Beam Testing: SLAC did damage testing of Borosilicate structures to determine the need for alternative materials such as fused silica.
