MASSACHUSETTS EYE AND EAR INFIRMARY & PHYSICIAN STAFF, INC.
This project addresses one of the leading public health issues in the US - the spread of antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus. S. aureus and especially methicillin resistant (MRSA) strains have emerged as leading causes of life-threatening infection in the community as well as in hospitals. This problem has become even more acute with the recent introduction of frank vancomycin resistance into the species. The goal of this program project is to derive new approaches for combating MRSA infection, and limiting the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. We will capitalize on multi-disciplinary perspectives to advance a better understanding of the development and spread of antibiotic resistance in S. aureus and to identify novel compounds, targets and pathways to compromise the microbe in its interaction with the host.
