The overall objective of this research effort is to introduce techniques for aircraft energy conservation and carbon footprint reduction with the potential for rapid transition to fleet. The period of performance for the technical effort is 9 months. The F-35 carrier variant (CV) aircraft will be used as the baseline vehicle to perform the study. The focus of this research effort is on technology identification and/or integration techniques in an overall system approach. Existing instrumentation and/or prognostics health management (PHM) information on the aircraft data bus will be assessed to sense and manage alternate engine and/or aircraft control modes (i.e. aircraft and/or engine efficiency mode).
Products from this study include a comparison of various techniques presented herein using metrics that will be defined and agreed-to by the customer. Metrics are expected to include items such as mission radius, fuel savings, implementation difficulty, cost, risk, development timeline etc. The contractor will assess and present implementation options to incorporate functionality into the pilot vehicle interface (PVI) and autopilot if merited. The contractor will develop and deliver roadmaps for suggested technology development efforts.
