EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY
The project is a supplement to the parent grant R01 CA-122704-02. The goals of this Diversity Supplement project are to develop and pilot test cognitive-behavioral coping skills training (CST) protocols tailored for partnered and unpartnered African American men with advanced prostate cancer. To achieve these goals, the proposed Diversity Supplement project has 3 aims: 1) To identify the symptom management and psychosocial needs of African American men with advanced prostate cancer and their partners; 2) To design telephone-based CST protocols tailored for partnered and unpartnered African American men with advanced prostate cancer that are culturally sensitive from both ethnicity and gender perspectives; and 3) To examine the efficacy of these telephone-based CST protocols for African American men with advanced prostate cancer and their partners. The specific research aims will be addressed across 2 phases of the proposed research project. Phase 1 will use focus groups to assess the needs of survivors with advanced cancer and their partners. African American prostate cancer survivors and their partners will participate in separate focus groups. Survivors will be asked to describe their physical symptoms and psychosocial needs. The partners will be asked to describe their psychosocial needs and experience of being a partner/caregiver to their loved one. During this phase, health care professionals will participate in an on-line survey to assess the reported needs of patients of advanced cancer and their caregivers, the needs they are able to meet in their clinical setting, and the needs they are not able to address. Phase 2 will involve a) designing the tailored protocols based on data from Phase 1 and b) pilot testing the CST protocols. The tailored CST protocols will be delivered in a telephone-based format over 6 sessions. Partnered men will receive partner-assisted CST. Unpartnered men will receive individual CST. Survivors will provide ratings of symptom severity, symptom distress, self-efficacy, masculinity beliefs, grieving, benefit finding, and social support at pre- and post-intervention. Partners will provide ratings of caregiver strain, self-efficacy, grieving, and benefit finding, and social support at pre- and post-intervention. This Diversity Supplement project will provide needed pilot data to support competitive grant applications to address ethnic disparities in prostate cancer survivorship and outcomes.
