THE TRUSTEES OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK INC
The proposal requests numerous Shipboard Scientific Support (SSSE) items for the vessels operated by the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO); namely the R/V MARCUS LANGSETH. The requests specifically include items that have been recommended from past NSF inspections, Navy INSURV's, or Post-Cruise Assessments (PCA's) and have been otherwise deferred by the operators due to cost. All of the items requested will either improve safety, enhance science support capability, or extend vessel service life. Due to the nature and timing of these requests, the vendor quotation standards normally required by the SSSE Program were waived out of necessity with many of the figures provided as estimates for budgetary purposes and based mainly on past experience of the vessel operators for similar work. Broader Impacts: The LANGSETH supports federally funded scientific research throughout the world's oceans to expand human knowledge of the ocean environment and is the only 3D seismic vessel in the academic fleet. During operations, the vessels routinely expose graduate and undergraduate students to seagoing oceanography through real-time satellite connectivity from ship to shore, and open house events. The LANGSETH is scheduled to complete over 260 NSF sponsored days in 2009.

Glosten Naval Architects have completed and submitted to the Office of Marine Operations the winch study to improve the over the side deployment and recovery of oceanographic instrumentation for the Oceanographic Research Vessel Marcus G. Langseth. The report proposes two phases of upgrades to improve the general purpose oceanographic capabilities for the ship. This report was presented to the National Science Foundation and to the Fleet Improvement Committee for the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System. Two older oceanographic winches installed on the Langseth were removed and disposed of. The capabilities of the starboard A-Frame was modified with the installation of flood lights, a vertical ladder, and winch. In addition fall arresting gear was acquired for installation on the A-Frame. These additions improve the vessel's capability to deploy and recover oceanographic instruments. The Engine Control and Pitch Control Upgrades were purchased and successful sea trials have been conducted. The Steering Control Upgrade, Propeller Shaft Seal Upgrade and Bowthruster upgrade were purchased, installed, and are in operation. The NSF Program Manager approved the cancellation of the Seismic Compressor Reliability Modifications. All of the newly installed systems have improved the efficiency and reliability of the Oceanographic Research Vessel Marcus G. Langseth when undertaking scheduled scientific research programs. This project came in under budget with over 99% of the funds expended. |
