Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

PUBLIC HEALTH, ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) collaborated with four authorized health jurisdictions (Cook, DuPage, Kane and Lake) serving the residents of the greater metropolitan Chicago area (excluding Chicago). This collaboration established a network of over 100 schools to strengthen school-based varicella outbreak detection and response, identify best practices and responses in school settings and evaluate the effectiveness of two-dose varicella vaccination in the context of an outbreak. IDPH and the four jurisdictions initiated a methodology to acquire weekly reports from each sentinel school on the incidence of varicella. This methodology included zero-case reporting. In conjunction with this initiative, IDPH staff conducted a random sampling of 1,200 student health records from 20 of the 103 sentinel site schools to validate varicella coverage levels reported to the ISBE and this assessment served as an indicator of two-dose varicella coverage levels. Project staff utilized the Illinois version of the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (I-NEDSS), a web-based disease reporting system, to document varicella case investigations and outbreak control measures deployed. Case-based reporting of varicella has been required since March 2008. When varicella cases and/or outbreaks occured among sentinel schools, staff from these four health jurisdictions were able to initiate vaccination clinics and other prevention and control measures and evaluate the effectiveness of the two-dose regimen on varicella infections. A portion of these ARRA funds ($34,770) was utilized to support I-NEDSS developers effecting modifications of the varicella module.
