Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION

Dr. Di Stefano and her co-investigators will use gravitational lensing to explore the local neighborhood of the Galaxy, the region within 1 kiloparsec.and will develop methods to identify local neuron stars, to measure their masses and transverse velocities, and to determine the fraction of them with companions, including planets. Final Project Report Submitted No
Project Activities Description Research and Development in the Physical, Engineering, and Life Sciences (except Biotechnology)
Quarterly Activities/Project Description During this quarter we have made significant progress. Because the funding period is about to end, we spent time working on the wrap-up papers, compiling the full set of results, and understanding their implications for the future of lensing studies. Our completed papers and publications are listed below. We have worked this quarter on revising paper [7]. We have also worked on our final large paper, a report on the VB10 observing program we conducted last year. We presented a poster with 12 co-authors at the winter meeting of the AAS and the PI is presently attending the 2013 meeting of the AAS's High-Energy Astrophysics Division, where she and Primini are presenting a poster on the mesolensing work supported by this NSF grant. In addition, the PI presented a colloquium at Yale in February. We are continuing to recruit participants to our mesolensing inspired "PLAN-IT" program, designed to find nearby planets and compact objects through their action as lenses. As we have noted, our team is diverse, including Prof. Ann Esin of Harvey Mudd College, her students, James Matthews from Southampton, and Whitney Nimitpattana, a Harvard sophomore.
