FAMILY SERVICE, INC
The Youth Opportunities Program (YOP), provides community-based mentoring for students at risk for dropping out of the Lawrence, Massachusetts schools. The YOP program partners with the Lawrence Public Schools to identify students who have specific risk factors and recruits them for participation in the program. Mentors (over age 21) are recruited from the community at-large to serve as role models with the mission to positively influence student?s commitment to school and pro-social activities. Over the four year grant period, 150 one-on-one mentor-mentee matches will be made. Each match will meet for a minimum of eight hours every month in a community setting. Program staff will provide monthly supervision and facilitate monthly group activities that focus on vocational training and career exploration.

The Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) continues to concentrate on recruitment. YOP staff as well as other mentoring programs from Family Service has developed an aggressive recruitment plan. The recruitment plan includes a mentoring PSA which will begin airing in May 2013. The PSA will run on our local Comcast television stations. It will also be shown as a movie preview in a local movie theater ?Chunkys?. YOP is also advertising on Google, Facebook and Pinterest. A billboard will also be used for recruitment beginning in June. The mentoring video continues to play on the Family Service website and on several different mentoring web-sites. The mentoring video is used to show the impact that mentoring has in the life of a young adult.
YOP staff has presented and provided information at twelve locations over this past quarter including a number of local restaurants, community colleges and local entertainment establishments.
In addition to recruitment, program staff continues to focus on the retention of the existing matches. All mentors, mentees and parents are contacted regularly to assess the current state of the match and to address any issues that have arisen. When possible, program staff works to attain free passes to community events, sports games and other fun activities. This quarter YOP has received discounted tickets to Fire and Ice and Ski Bradford.
During the past quarter, 23 potential mentors participated in four mentor trainings held on-site at Family Service. The program currently has a total of 107 matches to date with 7 in the process of being matched.
