UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH THE

Experimental and Theoretical Investigations of Electrostatic Interactions and Ordering in Highly Charged Colloidal Assemblies We aim to unveil the form of the fundamental electrostatic interactions by direct measurements of electrostatic interactions using Colloidal Probe Atomic Force Microscopy on concentrated, highly charged colloidal particle dispersions. We will examine the charge induced self-assembly of these particles into fcc crystalline colloidal arrays (CCA) by monitoring diffraction from the CCA, which will give information on the depth of the potential wells that define the fcc lattice ordering. These experimental results will be rationalized by theoretical calculations that model colloidal particle interactions in high concentration, highly charged article dispersions.

Project Activities Description Fundraising, Grants & Financial Support
Quarterly Activities/Project Description We have modeled 3D colloidal crystal arrays (CCA) which are highly ordered arrays of like charged colloidal particles with an effective interaction potential DLVO (screened-Coulomb interaction) in which the Coulomb repulsion is screened exponentially by the surrounding ions. The structure of the systems has been analyzed via Voronoi analysis. Several sets of DLVO parameters and two packing fractions (close to experimental values employed in the Asher group's experiments) have beenexamined: the results of Langevin dynamics simulations of these systemshave been analysed in order to study the ordering/melting process for CCA.This phase behavior have been studied using Voronoi polygons volumes and the number of faces.
