MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY, INC
Assembling the Viral Tree of Life research project will focus on understanding the evolutionary relationships between viruses and cellular life; helping to bridge the gap in our knowledge of archaeal viruses and their evolutionary relationships to the viruses and the evolution of life on this planet.

Main goal of the project is to search for and isolate new and unique viruses from the acidic hot springs in Yellowstone National Park. These viruses can help tackle evolutionary issues in relation to the origin and evolution of viruses. We have recently discovered that an archaeal virus we discovered from Yellowstone utilizes the same cellular proteins as eukaryal viruses. This provides an evolutionary link between viruses infecting Archaea and Eukarya. We have a number of strong candidates of viral sequences found in our numerous metagenomes from Yellowstone. We are also further characterizing the first archaeal RNA virus that has been described. Furthermore, the lab is learning new techniques that will be useful in the isolation and characterization of viruses and their hosts from hot spring environments. |
