Contracts - AWARD SUMMARY
BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE
57402 - Title: Land-Use Change Modeling Studies
Purpose: The purpose of the project is to improve land-use change modeling capabilities to help ensure biofuels can be produced sustainably
Description: The project will Increase the scope of sustainability research in land use change forecasting and bioenergy modeling to make Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) sustainability research more readily applicable at national scale. The task will accelerate the development of a high-resolution modeling system for the comprehensive analysis of biofuel deployment in the US landscape in terms of production potential, land use competition, and environmental impacts. PNNL, in partnership with ORNL, and the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC), is advancing computational and modeling capabilities to assess production and environmental impacts of biomass crops. This research is being conducted to ensure that the biomass can be produced in a sustainable manner. This award is for the work to be performed by PNNL and GLBRC. PNNL is conducting land-use modeling studies utilizing the resources of its Joint Global Climate Change Institute (JGCRI). GLBRC is conducting related studies on the environmental and sustainability aspects of biomass production.
Milestones:
o Obtain draft work statement from GLBRC, September 30, 2009
o Develop detailed technical milestones with PNNL and GLBRC, November 30, 2009
o Complete contract negotiations with GLBRC, December 30, 2009
SA 58269 - The National Advanced Biofuels Consortium will conduct cutting-edge research to develop infrastructure compatible, fungible ?drop-in? biomass-based hydrocarbon fuels. We will develop the technologies necessary to deliver cost-effective processes ready for pilot scale which maximize the use of existing refining and distribution infrastructure. The outcome will be a sustainable, cost-effective, advanced biofuels processing sequence with high process efficiency and maximum carbon utilization.
Milestones
Demonstrate production of key final products (E milestone) - 7/15/2011
Complete Stage II R&D Plan (E milestone, project deliverable) ? 9/15/2011
Complete design report(s) (D milestone, project deliverable) ? 8/15/2013
Report of final process and deliverables (project deliverable) ? 9/23/2013
SA 58003 -
Biology Task: Conducted proteomics analysis for algal species under varying environmental conditions.
Cultivation Task: Developed algal biomass growth model for predicting algal productivity. Completed climate simulated culture systems and conducted culture experiments with NAAB strains to validate system performance.
Harvesting and Extraction Task: PNNL began the development of the pilot scale membrane cross flow filtration system for harvesting microalgae.
Conversion Task: Continued research focus on evaluating catalytic conversion of algal crude lipid extracts to hydrocarbon fuels, hydrothermal liquefaction and upgrading to a hydrocarbon fuel products and hydrothermal gasification of lipid extracted algal biomass.
Sustainability Task: Continued the development GIS based models for algal biomass production.
Completion Date: April 30, 2013 (We will be requesting an extension of our POP through then end of FY13 to complete reporting and project close-out activities)
Milestones: D.ML.1 Select optimal conversion process for large scale production & wide scale use based, 4/15/2012,
