'X' PRIZE FOUNDATION, INC.
The Automotive X PRIZE (AXP) Education & Outreach Program (the Program) will use the X PRIZE Competition technical design and vehicle demonstrations as a means of attracting students and the public to learn more about advanced vehicle technologies, energy efficiency, climate change, alternative fuels and the science and math behind efficient vehicle development and commercialization.
The Program comprises four components that will provide a unique opportunity to spur school age interest in and public awareness of the science and engineering behind energy efficient vehicle designs:
Specific tasks include the following:
Design Judging: The Progressive Automotive X PRIZE competition (the Competition) will utilize a design review process to narrow the field of entrants. This process will be posted on the AXP OKC for review by students. The Program will provide independent technical expertise with broad automotive knowledge to execute Design Judging. The Competition will engage automotive experts who, together with selected Competition staff, will perform Design Judging. Design Judging will result in a sub-set of registered AXP vehicles that will be selected to proceed to the next phase of the Competition. Each team will be provided with a summary of the judge?s comments and an indication of their relative position in the Design Judging Process. Summaries of the successful vehicle technology approaches from the Design Review along with graphics and technical highlights of each vehicle will be posted on the AXP Online Knowledge Center (OKC) for review by students. Vehicle designs that fail Design Judging and its attendant appeals process will be eliminated from the competition.
Vehicle Telemetry Procurement, Installation & Integration: Vehicle telemetry/data acquisition hardware is essential to the technical execution of the Competition. The Program will procure, install and integrate telemetry equipment into the Competition vehicles and establish a data transmission network in order to enable real-time data telemetry to provide an interactive online experience where users can follow the AXP vehicles as they perform in real-time during the Competition. This data will be archived and made available online for post-competition analysis. Funds will be utilized to procure, implement and operate telemetry units and data network based on the physical, electrical and electronic specifications developed by the Competition. This task provides the resources to procure sufficient data acquisition hardware, the technical support to implement it in vehicles passing Design Judging and the data collection network at the test sites required to download data from the vehicles during the Competition Series.
Pre-Competition Series Safety & Technical Assistance: The Program will provide qualified vehicles with an array of expert consulting, vehicle safety inspections, fuel economy and emissions testing appropriate to their design and level of development. Vehicle design consulting will be provided to selected teams by personnel with expertise specific and relevant to their design and will include review and discussion of vehicle limitations and deficiencies as well as prospective corrective actions. Vehicle safety inspections will specifically address unique competition design features required in the AXP Guidelines and Rules. Testing may include dynamometer and will use the same test procedures as the Competition to gather energy efficiency or emissions data. Results from the tests will be posted on the AXP OKC after the competition in easy-to-understand formats and will include explanations suitable for review by students.
Design & Implement Technical Competition Components: Provide support for additional technical staff to design, implement & manage the Competition events. Design, test & operate a scoring system that enables the determination of Competition Series winners. Ensure the safe operation & technical validity of the Competition.

Voucher Program: A total of 12 teams participated in both the Emissions and Technical Consulting Voucher Programs to date. Four teams participated in the expanded Technical Consulting Voucher Program which included crash testing. The Voucher Program report will be available after it has been reviewed by the Department of Energy.
Julie Zona, Team Development and Relations Director, visited selected teams to gather information and create a ?where are they now? set of blogs for publication. Julie completed her visits with Team EVX, Edison2, Spira, and Amp. You can read her blogs here: http://autoblog.xprize.org .
Given feedback received from the Department of Energy, the Technical Report has been updated and submitted for a second review. Once it is complete it will be published. |
