This supplement is requested to develop a version of the existing CBT4CBT program that is applicable to alcohol using individuals, using a web-based format. The CBT4CBT program was developed for drug abusers and in a DVD/CD Rom format, largely because at the time we created the original program (2003-2004) the bandwidth and speed capacity of the internet was not sufficient to support the complexity of the CBT4CBT program. Multiple advances in technology and the internet in the ensuing period now makes it possible to convert the CBT4CBT program to a web-based format. This will greatly enhance the pace and yield of scientific research in this area by enabling us to make CBT4CBT much more widely available and to evaluate its efficacy in a range of settings and with a much more diverse range in individuals with alcohol-related problems.
The process for conversion to the web-based format will parallel the process used to develop the original version. This will entail frequent meetings between the Yale Division of Substance Abuse investigators and staff (Drs. Carroll, Martino, Ball) and the Yale ITS staff. First, we will meet to review the existing DVD-based CBT4CBT program, identify those components that are ready for web-conversion, as well as those components that should be re-shot or re-edited to reflect focus on an alcohol using populations. . Second, we will proceed with re-shooting the required video components (e.g., 6 new vignettes, refining the
narration) and setting up a secure website. As described in the budget justification, i*n order to complete the conversion quickly and smoothly, it will be necessary to support new staff on both the Yale Division of Substance Abuse and Yale ITS sides. *Much of the work of the second six months of Year 1 and the first six months of Year 2 will be conducted by the Yale ITS staff, while Dr. Carroll's team will focus on completing recruitment in the clinical trial. In the final 6 months, we will test the website and, as we did in the development of the DVD version, pilot it with 5-10 patients and staff and obtain their feedback before the web based version is released.
Year one: Months 1-6 Write new alcohol script, finalize plans for web-conversion Months 7-12 Re-shooting videos, editing videos for web format
Year two: Months 1-6 Construction of secure web site Months 7-12 Testing of web site, piloting and feedback from volunteers
