This award provides for COLA and Quality Improvement Funding for Head Start. Head Start promotes the school readiness of low-imcome children through the provision of comprehensive health, developmental and family services. The Quality Improvement funds were used for educational reimbursement for teachers to meet the federal mandate, training for family service workers, and adding additional teacher assistants to help with child/staff ratio, and a COLA increase for all Head Start Staff.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description ARRA COLA and Quality Funds were used to: Hire four teacher assistants, Give an additional week of work for all teaching staff to have training in curriculum, Conscious Discipline, and school readiness. Funds were used for educational assistance for teachers to meet federal mandates. Family Service Worker training Health screening training and related materials. Funds will also be used for a Mental Health Consultant. The Mental Health Consultant was contracted and he developed a new referral process for staff and parents. We now have a more parent friendly system, where the parents can access the Mental Health Consultant, and staff are given ideas and plans to put in place in the classrooms, while working with the parents. Four teacher assistants worked through month of September. This enhanced the child/staff ratio in some classrooms and give individual attention to children needing the support. COLA has been distributed. All Head Start staff recieved a 1.84% cola raise. Teaching staff returned to work a week early which enabled the program to offer intense training on the curriculum and Conscious Discipline. Family Service Workers received training on developing working Family Partnership Agreements, and enhancing family engagement. The ARRA funds has enhances our program not only for staff, but for the children and families we serve.
