| Description of Jobs Created |
This project has directly helped create or preserve at least one environmental technical and management job through the contractor's support of the EPA and Region 9 states in administering ARRA funding. In addition to this direct job creation, the support provided under this project has focused on developing the institutional and workforce capacity needed to implement environmentally superior water management and infrastructure development approaches that both spawn the development of new industries (and associated jobs) while introducing efficiencies (aggressive energy efficiency, for example) that saves water utilities money which then can be spent to hire additional support staff. Much of the work completed thus far has focused on optimizing water conservation and energy management at water and wastewater treatment plants. For example, four plant energy audits were conducted in Hawaii, where power costs can be as high as $0.50/kwh. The work conducted under this project, then, will have direct financial benefits to the water and wastewater treatment plants whose operating processes have been analyzed and optimized. However, this work is being leveraged to reach and influence many more plants by conducting informative workshops that detail the energy management system procedures and benefits. As such, jobs will be created at utilities where money is saved on energy in addition to private sector jobs associated with new energy and water efficiency assessment and optimization companies in the area. |
