| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
A state program to provide independent living services to older individuals who are blind, conduct activities that will improve or expand such services and help improve public understanding of the problems of such individuals consisting of four projects. 1. Purchased the license to use the AFB E-Learning Center on Aging and Visual Impairment includes 20 on-line courses addressing aging and vision loss, access to six online AFB Press e-books and the Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, minimum of two webinars per year and access to online experts on a pre-scheduled basis. 2. CBVH purchased 514 closed circuit television systems (CCTV) installed in select senior citizen centers and senior housing developments. 3. ALP Expansion-CBVH contracts with 18 private agencies to provide a wide variety of services to individuals who are at least 55 years old, whose goals do not include employment and who are in need of services to remain living independently. Services include, but are not limited to: low vision services, counseling/adjustment to blindness, community integration, and training in skills needed to retain independence in their homes. CBVH has used ARRA funding to increase the number of people receiving these services. Contract agencies are being reimbursed for the services provided. 4.CBVH has partnered with the New York State Office for the Aging to develop training targeted to nursing assistants in 1600 adult homes and nursing homes across the state. Using a train-the-trainer model, 35 Long Term Care Ombudsmen and select volunteers were trained to use a video developed for the project to help nursing assistants better understand the impact of vision loss and accommodate the needs of residents who are legally blind. The video is available on CBVH’s website. A video of the training session will be provided to individuals unable to attend the training sessions. |
