The overall purpose of the Brownfields Assessment and Cleanup grant is to clean up contaminated properties for redevelopment. Three projects were completed in Oregon.
Grants Pass acquired a former 250 acre hop farm. With ARRA funds the site was cleaned up and will be used for many community related activities including a public park, playfields, open space, and a community garden for food bank operations and food production for the Josephine County Food Bank. This project was done on time. The project came in over budget. All additional expenses beyond the increased award were covered by the city. There will be no additional ARRA funds drawn for this project.
The City of Oakridge acquired a former 220 acre Bald Knob Timber Company mill site. This was cleaned up and redeveloped into an industrial park. With ARRA funds the city was able to complete many projects including wetland mitigation, riparian enhancement and compensatory wetland areas and the removal of 1320 tons of contaminated soil. This project was done on time and within budget. There will be no additional ARRA funds drawn for this project.
Port of Newport was able to clean up and remove petroleum products from the interior of a former World War II era concrete hulled cargo ship that had been sunk in the late 1940's. The cleanup of the Paisly was completed in October of 2011 followed immediately by demolition making way for construction of a new terminal deck. An on-site water system treatment was installed and filters over 19 million gallons of water. A $24 million redevelopment of the Port's International Terminal is now underway to be completed in fall 2012. There will be no additional ARRA funds drawn for this project. |
