In order to address the needs of homeless students, activities provided focused extended learning opportunities to struggling Free-and-Reduced-Lunch eligible students who attend selected Title I schools, and who are living in homeless shelters. These students are struggling to demonstrate grade-level proficiency in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics as measured by the Hawaii State Assessment (HSA). Activities were to develop and implement an after-school homework and tutoring support program. Two after-school homework centers in the Nanakuli and Waianae areas that are based at separate homeless shelters. In this quarter, 110 students participated in the Ohana Ola O Kahumana homework center (including 55 students of infant and toddler age), and 102 students participated at the Ulu Ke Kukui homework center. At the centers, students accessed online instructional software programs to build reading and math skills. After taking placement tests, students accessed instructional software that supported reading fluency and comprehension development. The primary software programs used are Reading Plus and MyLexia. Activities included reward nights that recognize students for completing benchmarks, and certificates were distributed to students who met their targets.One para-professional assists students at each of the sites, and a part-time teacher coordinates the two programs. In the third quarter of the 2010-2011 school year, 109 students participated at the Ohana Ola O Kahumana homework center, including 55 students of infant and toddler age and 103 students participated at the Ulu KeKukui homework center. In the quarter ended June 30, 2011 109 students were served at Ohana Ola O Kahumana homework center and an additional 102 students were served at the Ulu Ke Kukui homework center. In the quarter ended September 30, 2011 ,the part time-teachers and tutors worked a total of 306 hours which translates to .59 FTES. 0 FTES for the qtr ended Dec. 30, 2011 |
