The purpose of this contract is to provide services for the Student/Resident Experiences and Rotations in Community Health (SEARCH) program(s) to provide opportunities for health professions students and residents to serve on multidisciplinary health care teams in underserved communities throughout the United States and its territories, thereby establishing and strengthening links between community-based sites and academic institutions. As a contractor, the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers (MLCHC) goal will be to assist the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Bureau of Clinician Recruitment and Services (BCRS) with its recruitment and the retention efforts of health care professionals for primary health care service; and facilitate and strengthen partnerships between communities and academic institutions (community-academic linkages). In order to accomplish these goals, MLCHC will: • Provide rotational experiences for health professions students and residents to apply their classroom experiences into practice in a primary care setting; • Provide multidisciplinary health care team training model for students and residents; • Implement a curriculum aimed to develop culturally competent, community minded primary care providers; • Strengthen statewide partnerships committed to meeting the diverse primary care needs of the underserved; and, • Address the geographic disparities in Massachusetts that challenge clinical placements and other pipeline development programs. MLCHC will accomplish these objectives by implementing the following SEARCH programs: • Greater Boston SEARCH – A Multi-cultural Urban Learning Experience -The proximity of community health centers, cultural and ethnic populations and academia, provides a rich opportunity for SEARCH in Greater Boston area. • Western MA (Berkshires) SEARCH – A Rural Health Experience - Offers SEARCH participants a unique opportunity to live and work in rural towns of western MA.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description The reporting period of Oct - Dec 2012 focused on completing final SEARCH deliverables: Final Contract Report. Report was submitted to HRSA Project Officer on October 30, 2012. A total of 96 student placements over 3 years was proposed under this contract and 97 student placements were made by the conclusion of the contract on September 30, 2012. All required contract deliverables have been completed, received and acknowledged by HRSA.

Description of Jobs Created No new positions have been created or retained as a result of funding. The MA SEARCH program is a pipeline development program for primary care clinicians. The goal is that the MA SEARCH program will expose students and residents to community-based primary care in underserved area with an end result of recruiting the SEARCH participants to work in these setting after they complete their education. For those community sites and mentors working with the SEARCH participants, the goal is to provide a career development opportunity and continued career enrichment through teaching in order to retain the clinician mentors. A total of 96 student placements over 3 years was proposed under this contract and 97 student placements were made by the conclusion of the contract on September 30, 2012. ***NOTE: The "subcontracts under $25K amount" for the reporting period Oct 1-Dec 31, 2009 was incorrect as it illustrated the subcontract amount for the entire year. The correct number for the period of Oct 1 - Dec 31, 2009 is $7,000.
