These supplemental funds are being used in two ways. Two other mucin-null mice are now available, Muc5AC (the goblet cell mucin) and Muc5B (which is present in small amounts in human tears, the source of which is unknown). To take advantage of these additional valuable strains of mucin-null mice, additional monies were used for personnel to carry out the experiments as well as to cover animal charges for quarantine and maintainance, which increased significantly to $2,000 per mouse line, Experiments are being completed and data analyzed.
