Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

RAYTHEON BBN TECHNOLOGIES CORP.

The Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) is a novel suite of infrastructure now being designed to support experimental research in network science and engineering. The majority of this award is to fund 38 subcontractors, consisting of collaborating sets of both academic and industrial teams to integrate, operate, and host experiments on an end-to-end prototype GENI infrastructure. The funds will enable the GENI project to create and integrate prototypes that will fill critical gaps in GENI's architecture and control framework, and build upon the achievements of previous year's success.

Project Activities Description Computer Science
Quarterly Activities/Project Description GENI?s vision is to become the world?s first laboratory environment for exploring future internets at scale, promoting innovations in network science, security, technologies, services and applications. The GENI control framework project objective is to fund the network science and engineering community to create a virtual laboratory, through a common API for exploring possible future internets at-scale. Dynamic and adaptive, GENI aims to open up new areas of research at the frontiers of network science and engineering, and increase the opportunity for significant socio-economic impact. The networking community's collaboration and 35 academic institutions and industry partners have been excellent. Together they have delivered the following: 1. Meso-scale infrastructure that is instrument-able for researchers and experimenters. 2. End-to-end infrastructure that's programmable throughout the network. This allows innovations in network science, security, technologies, services and applications by the researchers and experimenters. 3. Provide collaborative and exploratory environments for academia, industry and the public, to catalyze groundbreaking discoveries and innovation. If this succeeds, it will completely transform research in networking and distributed systems. Given the ever-growing importance of the Internet and global computing systems, its success could also create major opportunities for our economy and society.
Jobs Created 2.04
Description of Jobs Created The Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) is a novel suite of infrastructure now being designed to support experimental research in network science and engineering. This development and prototyping project involves 35 subcontractors consisting of collaborating sets of both academic and industrial teams to create and integrate prototypes such as security, tools, user interfaces, instrumentation and measurement. For the prime contractor, this project has created a half time equivalent system engineer. For the subs, the jobs creation included a fraction of professors, researchers, research assistants, IT staff and administrative support personnel. For some institutions, their funds also supported a portion or full time graduate students and/or programmers. The professors and researchers are the project PIs who have led their respective prototyping development and integration projects. The research assistants, graduate students and programmers of each respective organization have been supporting the integration, operation, and running of the experiments. The IT staff have been supporting the campus connectivity, while the administrative personnel have been supporting the project on procurement, project tracking and reporting.
