Chignik Bay Tribal Council received grant funds through VIPERS and used those funds to hire local carpenters at the Tribe's prevailing wage. The Tribe also procured the services of a construction superintendent to oversee the work.
Work began during the Second Quarter of 2012. Five households were selected as eligible, and three homes received weatherization and energy efficiency retrofit work before the end of the Second Quarter. During the Third Quarter, one of the selected households declined assistance offered under this grant. The work on the fourth and last home was completed in July.
The cost of hiring a construction supervisor included travel, food, and lodging costs. This expense consumed a significant amount of the grant money. (The budget has been updated in PAGE.) Fortunately, the Tribe had all the necessary doors, windows, and insulation left over from previous projects and donated those building materials in-kind.
