During the reporting period the Columbia EFRC (Energy Frontier Research Center) has brought to conclusion through scientific publication two of our major program activities. Firstly, we have demonstrated a new way to study the properties of "excitons" in molecular layers. These "excitons" are initial charge pairs that have been created in a molecule through the absorption of light. Our experiments examine the light emitted by excitons through measurement of the intensity, color, and polarization of the light as a function of angle. This data allows us to directly determine the orientation and the character of these "excitons." For one system important to our program, molybdenum sulfide molecular sheets, we discover that these excitations lie entirely within the plane of the sheet. In a second molecular system that is typical for organic photovoltaic cells, we have discovered for the first time two different excitons - one which lies within the plane of the molecular layer and another which involves charge separation across the molecular layer. These methods provide insight into the formation of electrical charge pairs in molecular systems and help us understand how these charge pairs ultimately become separated to generate electrical current. Secondly, we have carried out experiments to understand the interface between layers in photovoltaic cells based on organic donor and acceptor molecules. These experiments combine x-ray analysis that gives the molecular structure with examination of the energy of electrons emitted which gives information about the electronic structure. We have found that the charge transfer across this interface is enhanced with electron donor molecules that are distorted so that they form a "ball-and-socket" interface with spherical acceptor molecules. This discovery will allow us to design molecular systems for organic photovoltaic cells that more efficiently transfer electrical charge from one layer to another. |
