VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY
The proposed VCU Noyce Initiative is a scholarship program designed to increase the number and retention of highly effective, diverse secondary science teachers in high-need schools in the metro-Richmond area by (1) recruiting and supporting 32 outstanding VCU science majors (Noyce Scholars) who will receive a 2-year scholarship in exchange for teaching science for at least 4 years in a high-need school; (2) identifying and training 16 master science teachers who will serve as Noyce Teaching Fellows and mentor the Noyce Scholars during a year-long residency in a high-need secondary school; and (3) providing ongoing support for Noyce Scholars during their first years in the classroom. School districts in the Richmond metropolitan region comprised of the Cities of Richmond and Hopewell and surrounding counties have consistently been unable to fill all secondary science positions with highly qualified teachers. Currently, these districts employ 90 provisionally-certified secondary science teachers while Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Education (SOE) has graduated an average of only eight secondary science teachers per year over the past 5 years. Intervention beyond current efforts by the SOE need to be enacted to significantly increase the number of secondary science graduates. We are confident that the VCU Noyce Initiative will provide the vehicle for meeting this critical need.
