ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
The proposed program will provide excellent training opportunities for graduate students in parallel computing and offer them easy access and hands-on experience to a high performance computing cluster. Four courses in computational mathematics will be enhanced by incorporating parallel computation in Numerical Methods for PDEs, Meshfree Methods, Monte-Carlo Methods, and Advanced Scientific Computing. A new course in Numerical Methods for stochastic PDEs will be developed. The students who take the courses include both graduate and undergraduate students and are from different discplines, including Applied Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aeropsace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Computer Science. On the technological and social aspects, the proposed cluster will provide support for research projects that have applications to a broader set of related problems including global climate change, option pricing, membrane-based drug delivery, environmental research and monitoring, and large-scale computing software.

We have purchased the major equipment in the proposal: a parallel computer (a cluster of 148 cores). Our university has successfully installed the computer in our proposed location. The computer support department of our university, together with a Ph.D. student, has made MPI work properly and has installed the parallel server of MATLAB on the cluster. PI and co-PIs have received computer accounts on the cluster and have started to do research using the new system. Some have started working on the proposed research projects by running the simulations on single processors. |
