Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY INC

This engineering education research award to Loyola Marymount University will employ researchers to create and assess an on-line interactive learning environment called the Virtual Engineering Sciences Learning Lab (VESLL). The resources of the popular Second Life fantasy world will be used to create a cyberlearning environment for engineering students with focus on both discipline specific content and interdisciplinary professional skills. The virtual learning environment will offer benefits of visualization and simulation capabilities, collaborative problem solving, access to remote resources, and immediate feedback to students. The assessments of VESLL will provide a valuable deeper understanding of how effective popular virtual environments can be as learning environments for engineering students. The use of virtual learning environments can increase interest in engineering and provide more resources to engineering students to better prepare them for engineering jobs.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description ARRA Report Summary, December 2012: NSF Grant 093510 Final Expenditure Report: This is the final report for award # 0935100. Total award expenditures came to $717.25 less than the full award amount due to less than expected supply costs for the project. No further expenditures will be charged to this award. Project Report: An article for submission to IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies has been drafted for submission. The article is being finalized and will be submitted in February 2013. The final grant report was submitted in November 2012. Motivation for the VESLL project and an overview of our results will be incorporated into a discussion that the PI, Stephanie August, will lead with Jungwoo Ryoo, Pennsylvania State University-Altoona, at the TUES PI Conference in Washington, D.C., 23-25 January 2013. Michele Hammers and Stephanie August will present results of the VESLL project at the Loyola Marymount University Center for Teaching Excellence during the "Teaching with Technology" event on 18 January 2013. The project domain name has been renewed for another year, and the Second Life license has been renewed through April 2013 with support from the LMU College of Communication and Fine Arts as we explore other funding options and delivery platforms.
