Title: Advanced Material Propulsion Initiative (AMPI) Advanced Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) for Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) - Addendum 2: Effects of Defects Study Program. The purpose of the AMPI program is to improve CMC manufacturing processes through the use of NDE technologies that will result in increased yields and quality while reducing costs and processing times. A major impediment to full implementation of CMC materials into aerospace applications is the lack of data and models linking measurable defects parameters to thermo-mechanical behavior and subsequent failure. To address this impediment, work has been funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to conduct an effects of defects study on CMC materials by creating specimens with known defects and correlating these with mechanical property data derived from thermo-mechanical tests. The test results will also assist in the validation of numerical models for these materials. An additional goal is to down select specific NDE technologies for manufacturing quality inspections for CMC production process. The primary deliverable of the program is a final report detailing: 1) the mechanical tests conducted and assessments of the effect of the defects on the behavior of the material tested, and, 2) the NDE processes evaluated with recommendations for the processes that can meet the performance, cost and technical maturity requirements for manufacturing quality inspections of CMCs. In support of the overall objectives of this program, the major outcomes are:
- Quantification of the effect of selected defects on material properties.
- Evaluations of the NDE processes and identification of the output requirements necessary to ensure successful detection of parameters critical to defect characterization.
- Recommendations for implementation of an appropriate NDE inspection method into production for material quality assessments.

The Effects of Defects Study on the mechanical behavior of S200 ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material of relevant manufacturing defects is complete. The purpose of the study was to obtain a distinct correlation between two different manufacturing defect porosity levels and effects in materials mechanical strength properties. The second was to indentify a nondestructive method that could detect relevant manufacturing defects in S200 during production. Ultimately, the results of this study would be used to correlate specific NDE output with a reduction in mechanical properties so that in-process inspections would screen out those materials that did not meet specific performance requirements.
The study showed a strong relationship between the retained strength as a function of porosity level. Base on these findings and those from the NDE assessment, it can be concluded that thermography can discriminate a difference in porosity that will adversely affect the mechanical behavior of S200. A final report was submitted and is being reviewed.

| Description of Jobs Created |
The ARRA funding allowed UDRI research personnel to continue at a full-time and/or part-time level. No jobs were created during this reporting period; however several highly skilled jobs were retained, which allowed our institution to remain competitive in research and development in advanced materials characterization and testing. The types of jobs retained includes: research engineers, scientist, technicians and clerical. The four UDRI sub-recipient reports no jobs were created or retained during this period. The jobs data reported by sub-recipients are combined with UDRI's number of jobs impacted. |
