Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

TRUSTEES OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK

This project addresses the question of the nature of dark matter in the Universe with an experimental search for Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMPs) using two-phase xenon detectors. This group is currently operating at the 100 kg mass scale with

Projects and Jobs Information
Project Title Collaborative Proposal: Continuation of the XENON Dark matter Project: Construction and Underground Operation of an Upgraded XENON100 Detector
Project Status Completed
Final Project Report Submitted Yes
Project Activities Description Science & Technology
Quarterly Activities/Project Description The award supports the XENON100 Dark Matter Experiment, located underground at the "Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso" LNGS (http://www.lngs.infn.it/lngs_infn/) in Italy. The focus for this quarter has been to complete the analysis and publication of the 225 live-days of dark matter data accumulated over 2011 and 2012. The XENON100 results have been submitted to Phys. Rev. Letters and announced by the PI on July 19 at the Dark Attack Conference in Switzerland. They represent the most stringent limits on dark matter interactions with matter to-date, for WIMP mass above 8 GeV. XENON100 remains the most sensitive experiment worldwide and has excluded further regions of theoretically favored parameter space. Several talks have been given on the new results by Aprile, Melgarejo (XENON100 Analysis Coordinator), and Budnick. Effort has gone also in resuming operation of the experiment after a period of shut-down for systems maintenance and for preparing a new Kr-distillation aiming at a lower background. We project to be able to complete the distillation and resume science data taking by the end of Sept 2012. We also continue to work at Nevis Labs on several R&D projects all related to the XENON Dark Matter program. Several scientists and postdocs (Giboni,Messina, Melgarejo, Budnick, Plante, Rizzo), and physics graduate students (Lim, Contreras) are fully involved with these activities. During the Summer, three undergraduates and a HS student were also involved with these projects at Nevis.
