EMORY UNIVERSITY
The purpose of this award of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds is to accelerate the tempo of scientific research at the Emory HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (EHCTU). The ARRA funds are requested specifically to accelerate the research being undertaken for the HIV Prevention Trials Network. In March 2008 the EHCTU was activated as a HPTN site to conduct two trials: HPTN 061 and HPTN 064. Atlanta was one of only a few cities selected to recruit into both of these highly important studies. Over the course of the next 12 months the EHCTU will be expected to recruit 603 high risk African American men and women, a task that will likely require the identification and screening of over 3,000 potential participants. This is a large and difficult undertaking given the legacy of past and recent research discrimination in the southeastern United States. These funds will accelerate study volunteer recruitment, enhance participant retention, build study recruitment capacity at key community-based organizations (CBOs), and create 34 new full-time jobs and 16 part-time jobs at Emory and our partner community-based organizations. The Specific Aims for the ARRA Funds are: 1. To accelerate the tempo of HIV Prevention Trials Network studies within the Emory HIV/AIDS clinical trials unit. 2. To increase the pace of enrollment into HPTN 061 and 064. 3. To build research capacity within existing and new community partner organizations, including hiring and training new staff.
